Using the simple metrics (yards per game) of total offense and total defense to evaluate performance is so 2005. Speaking of 2005, the Hokies only averaged 380.9 yards per game that year, but they did rank #5 in the country in S&P+ offense. Teams just didn’t spread it out and run their offense at a fast pace back then, which impacted total yards.

Despite allowing 592 yards of total offense against West Virginia and an average of 407.5 yards through the first two games of the season, Virginia Tech’s defense ranks #10 nationally in the S&P+ metrics. I bet you probably would not have guessed that. However, the fact that the Mountaineers ran 89 plays had a big impact on the amount of total yards the Hokies allowed.
