Khalid Martin will freely admit that he’s thought about making a commitment. Not necessarily where he wants to commit, but how and when.

Martin, a Class of 2019 defensive back from East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, N.C., now has 15 scholarship offers, most recently from West Virginia, Louisville and North Carolina. He took visits this summer, to get a better idea of his options. There’s still plenty of uncertainty, but Martin has a good idea of what he’s looking for in his future home.

“I just make sure they’re family-oriented,” he said. “That’s where I’m going to be living for the next three or four years. I see how the coaches interact with players outside of football. That’s why I’m glad I took visits after football season. I’m going to be spending a lot of time with them. I’m making sure they’re not just telling you a sales pitch.”

Martin,’s No. 29 safety and No. 12 player in North Carolina for the 2019 class, was at Virginia Tech this spring. He had to cancel a trip to Blacksburg last month, though his thoughts on the Hokies haven’t changed much.

“With Virginia Tech, I know it’s hard for coaches to reach out,” Martin said. “I was supposed to go for the barbecue in July, but something came up, a family issue. The first time I went though, it was beautiful. It was mind-blowing. Everybody told me that it was going to be mind-blowing, but I didn’t believe that until I went on campus. The football there is amazing, the academics are amazing and a bonus, the food is amazing.”
