In our last episode, the tumultuous month of May 2003 stumbled to a close with no resolution to ACC expansion. But May did reveal a shocking revelation: the University of Virginia—once thought to be a roadblock to Virginia Tech’s inclusion—is now its ticket to admission.
Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim continues to be a voice against his school joining a league that makes no geographical or aesthetic sense for his university. He tells the Miami Herald, “We’re going to have two northeastern schools—us and BC—in a league with 10 southern schools. We’re going to turn our backs on a league in which we are a leading voice and join a league in which we have no say. That’s insane.”
The ACC makes a site visit to Boston College. According to the Boston Globe, upon conclusion of the visit, ACC officials tell BC it is a “perfect fit for the ACC.” BC AD Gene DeFilippo tells newspapers ACC conference officials have never made a site visit without extending an offer to join the conference. He claims he is told the site visit is “merely a formality.”
