Virginia Tech had a very young secondary in 2015.  The young players took their lumps, but showed flashes that they have the potential to be a good unit at some point down the road.  With added experience, Bud Foster is hoping to be able to play a greater variety of coverages this season.  Hopefully that adjustment will translate in the W-L column.

The Redshirts

By my count, the Hokies have 15 scholarship defensive backs on the roster this season.  That equals a three-deep at each position, and certainly plenty of bodies to fill the two-deep during the regular season, when the redshirting true freshmen go to the practice squad.

Right now we don’t know who is playing left corner or right corner, and we don’t know what position some of the true freshmen are actually playing.  Many are listed simply as “DB” on the official HokieSports.com roster.  So we’ll begin this preview with a section on the players who will be redshirting, and then work our way down.

The following players are likely redshirts this year…

#2 Tyree Rogers (6-1, 173, Fr.)
#26 Jovonn Quillen (6-0, 176, Fr.)
#9 Khalil Ladler (5-11, 183, Fr.)

We know that Khalil Ladler is a cornerback, but it’s not clear what position Jovonn Quillen and Tyree Rogers are playing.  Rogers is a likely free safety, while I could see Quillen everywhere but rover at this stage of his career.
