Former Purdue commitment Dylan Powell has been a hot commodity in these final few months before National Signing Day for the class of 2016, and Virginia Tech is one of three finalists the Hannibal (MO) offensive line prospect is considering.
“The three schools I’m considering are Iowa State, Stanford and Virginia Tech,” Powell said.
Powell has taken an official visit to Iowa State. A Virginia Tech official visit begins tomorrow, January 27, and lasts through the morning of January 29. Powell is then scheduled to fly to Stanford this coming weekend for what will be his final official visit.
“The biggest factor for me is where I feel most comfortable for my family and I, and where I think I’ll be most successful on the field and after school,” said Powell, who is considering a possible Business major but has not fully settled on his future academic plans.
Powell discussed his interest in Virginia Tech, which offered back in December.
“I just love the way they run the program. They are great guys. I’ve had a great relationship with them since they were at Memphis. They offered as soon as I got to Virginia Tech, which showed me they believed in me,” Powell said.
“Coach Fuente and Coach Vice are hard, blue collar guys,” continued Powell, who believes the Tech coaches like him as an interior lineman. “They put in the sweat to make the program successful. They are very personable and easy to relate to.”
Asked if he thought he would decide on February 3 (National Signing Day), Powell said: “I think it depends on how things go. I’m ready to get it over with. For me it has been a long process, especially the last couple of months. It’ll be nice to relax and enjoy my friends and family. I hope to send out my decision on February 1, but that’s not 100-percent.”
Is Powell leaning toward one school heading into this week’s visits?
“I think they are all pretty much even,” Powell said. “I just need to get out to Virginia Tech and Stanford. It’s going to be big for me to experience what it’s like at each of those schools.”
