One of Cheyton Pine’s childhood favorites came through with a scholarship offer this past Wednesday morning.
“Coach Cornell Brown told me about it,” the Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA) rising senior said, recalling how he learned he had a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech. “He told me how excited he was. He said they had a staff meeting and Coach Beamer and Coach Foster extended the offer to me. He was the relay man. Getting an offer from those three is a big accomplishment, especially coming from a legend like Coach Beamer. Cornell Brown played there, which is something that’s awesome.”
Pine, a 6’3”, 218-pound outside linebacker prospect, is optimistic about his chances of landing an offer from his other childhood favorite next weekend.
“I honestly think when I go [to Notre Dame] next Saturday, if I do a good job they will offer,” said Pine, who will participate in a camp next weekend in South Bend.
East Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Wake Forest are among the other schools that have offered the versatile prospect, who saw action at quarterback, tight end, outside linebacker and defensive end for the Rams this past season. Pine is humbled by the college attention he has received.
“Being in this position is definitely… I can’t even put it in words,” Pine said. “Definitely, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, those are the top two schools I was watching when I was younger. Having Virginia Tech offer and Notre Dame probably going to offer is one of the best things to ever happen to me.”
If he had to, could Pine pick between Virginia Tech and Notre Dame?
“That would be pretty hard, actually. I just don’t know as of now,” Pine said. “A good visit could change everything. It’s a mind-boggling experience.”
To be clear, Pine has not narrowed his list of schools. In fact, he plans on exploring two other schools this weekend, when he travels to Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Pine goes to Notre Dame next weekend and says he hopes to add Blacksburg to his list of stops this summer.
This spring, the Lafayette star was in Lane Stadium for the Virginia Tech Spring Game.
