Rounds one and two of the VT hoops draft are complete.  We’ve still got four rounds remaining.  After today’s third round, the picture will start to clear up for each team.

So far, the rosters look like this…

Justin Clark: G Dell Curry ($5), G Erick Green ($4) – $6 remaining
Niemo: G Bimbo Coles ($5), F Ace Custis ($4) – $6 remaining
Chris Coleman: C Dale Solomon ($5), G Zabian Dowdell ($4) – $6 remaining
Will Stewart: F Allan Bristow ($5), G Malcolm Delaney ($3) – $7 remaining

Virginia Tech doesn’t have a great basketball tradition, so after the first two rounds, the number of “great” available players becomes somewhat limited.  What will our “coaches” do?  Justin Clark will start off the third round of the draft.

Third Round, Pick One – Justin Clark

C Bill “Moose” Matthews, $3

The hardest part about this pick is pondering how Matthews would play in today’s game due to his 6’5” stature.  For those who don’t know who Matthews is, he was a prominent player on our 1952-1956 teams. He finished his career 14th on the all-time scoring list with 1652 career points, 2nd on the all-time rebounds list with 1379, and averaged an astounding 18.8 rebounds per game during his junior season.  While his stature is a concern, Matthews was a rebounding machine on the interior.  He was a 3-year captain as well, which adds to already great leadership on this team.

Also of note, Matthews later coached the Virginia Tech Men’s Golf team after his basketball career ended.

Third Round, Pick Two – Niemo

Jamon Gordon is one of the best defenders in Tech history.
