Austin Clark knew he wanted to make his college choice in early June. The Rockbridge County (Lexington, VA) offensive tackle, a rising senior, has settled on June 12 as the day when he’ll make a verbal commitment, which he will announce live at 6 p.m. on WSLS Channel 10 in Roanoke. The announcement will also be streamed live on Rivals.com.

When we last spoke with Clark, he had just narrowed his list to seven schools: Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech. He’ll cut the field to four the weekend before he commits.

“I’m taking the next couple of weeks to sit down with my family and discuss things I’m looking for in a college,” Clark said.

“I definitely think I’m getting closer to a decision. Right now I’m pretty sure I know the top four, but from there I will keep narrowing it down and narrowing it down until I pick one school.”

Clark has visited all of the finalists, but he plans on making one more visit – a trip to South Carolina this weekend – before the big announcement.

Clark, who is rated a 4-star recruit by 247Sports, will graduate from Rockbridge County in December. He’ll then enroll at his school of choice in January of 2015. Clark looks forward to putting recruiting behind him in order to focus on his senior season and preparing for the next level.

“This recruiting process has been a great experience,” Clark said. “Now that it’s getting closer to decision time it’s a little stressful, but I know whichever school I choose will absolutely be the right fit for me.”

My Take

The consensus right now is that Clark will likely head out-of-state to play his college ball. That’s my gut feeling on this as well, although I expect one or both in-state finalists to make the final four. South Carolina getting another visit would seem to bode well for the Gamecocks. If he does indeed leave the state, I see Clark heading to the SEC.
