Basketball coaches’ pay compares favorable to football coaches’ pay

I encourage you to read the article, but in short, Williams’ contact includes a number of incentives ranging from NCAA Tournament appearances to team GPA, and it also includes generous buyout clauses for Williams. Besides the $725,000 pool for assistant coaches, $325,000 per year are dedicated to support staff such as video coordinator, Director of Basketball Operations, etc.
As we’ve said time and time again, Virginia Tech’s support for men’s basketball has gone from practically non-existent to a major effort. What does that mean for the future of Virginia Tech football?
Throwing out the administrative support staff for both sports, let’s look at the salaries for the four men’s basketball coaches and the 10 football coaches. Buzz Williams will make $2.3 million in his first season, and his assistants will make $725,000. Frank Beamer will make about $2.4 million, while his assistants (based on last year’s numbers) look like they’ll bring in almost $2.6 million.
