
Virginia Tech is about to play in their 21st consecutive bowl game under Frank Beamer. Here’s a look back at bowls of the past, and what has happened to the programs and coaches the Hokies have encountered along the way.
Today: the 1990s bowl opponents.
1993 Independence Bowl
Virginia Tech 45, Indiana 24
Indiana Coach: Bill Mallory
Then: Indiana, coached by Bill Mallory was going to their sixth bowl game in eight years, at a time when there were only 19 bowl games (compared to the 35 bowl games in 2013).
Since then: One has to wonder if the loss to Virginia Tech destroyed the Indiana program. The Hoosiers have been to one bowl since losing to Virginia Tech, a 2007 Insight Bowl loss to Oklahoma State, and 2007 season is the only winning season (7-6) since the Hoosiers went 6-5 in 1994.
The opposing coach: Mallory was let go after the 1996 season, following 2-9 (1995) and 3-8 (1996) seasons, and has been out of coaching ever since.
