Virginia Tech has scored its 13th verbal commitment of the 2014 recruiting class.  Paramus Catholic (Paramus, N.J.) offensive lineman Billy Ray Mitchell  jumped on board early this evening, accepting a scholarship offer from Tech over a handful of other offers, including Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Southern Mississippi, and Syracuse.  Ole Miss and others expressed serious interest.

Mitchell has informed Tech primary recruiter Jeff Grimes of his intentions.  He’ll speak with head coach Frank Beamer tomorrow.

Grimes “was fired up.  I was fired up,” Mitchell said, recalling the new Virginia Tech offensive line coach’s reaction to his commitment.  “He told me he was happy and he can’t wait to get after it on the field.  I can’t wait to talk to Coach Beamer tomorrow.”

The Garden State standout loved an unofficial visit he made to Blacksburg back in May.  In comments tonight, Mitchell reveals he admired Tech long before the spring visit.

“The reason I committed is because I’ve loved Virginia Tech since I was a kid,” he said.  “And I want to get Virginia Tech back to where it used to be.  It’s still good, but it used to be at the top of the ACC and contending for national titles.  I want to recruit actively, spread the word, and get recruits they are looking at to take a better look at them.  I also wanted to commit for my team.  The season is coming up and I want to start focusing on that.  The reason I took a little while was because I wanted to make the right decision.”

Just a few weeks ago, Mitchell considered prolonging his recruitment to take a look at schools such as Nebraska and Wisconsin, which had recently begun to show interest.  Ole Miss, the school where his father played, was also in the picture but had not offered.  Mitchell decided to go ahead and commit, though, and he’s happy with his decision.

“I talked to my family.  I slept on it.  I talked to God about it,” Mitchell said of how he came to his decision.  “I’m real happy.  I’m where I want to be.  Virginia Tech has great people and coaches, and Blacksburg is a great town.  I’ve talked to earlier commits and I’m now working on guys we want to get.  I want to make the program great.”

At 6’4″, 270 pounds, Mitchell starts at offensive tackle at Paramus Catholic.  Virginia Tech plans on using him as an interior lineman,
