Virginia Tech wraps up spring practice on Saturday with the annual Maroon-White game. Today we’ll take a quick look at each offensive position and see where the Hokies stand heading into Saturday’s game.
The BeamerBall.com depth chart hasn’t been updated since April 4. Whether or not the actual depth chart has changed, we don’t know. Perhaps there will be official changes next week, once spring practice officially ends.
Logan Thomas (r-Jr.) has spent the spring trying to get into a rhythm with his younger receivers. D.J. Coles has missed the entire spring, a rusty Dyrell Roberts is back from an injury (and he’s played just three games with Thomas), and Marcus Davis was lost for the remainder of the spring with a hamstring injury that occurred last week.
As a result, Thomas has gotten a lot of work with guys like Corey Fuller, Kevin Asante, Demitri Knowles, and others. His numbers have not been impressive, which is no surprise. When Coles and Davis return in August, expect Logan’s numbers to go back up.
Mark Leal (r-So.) missed last Wednesday’s mini-scrimmage due to class, and he missed Saturday’s open scrimmage because of an illness. It’s hard to tell how much progress he has made, because in the first scrimmage he didn’t have time to throw the ball behind Tech’s #2 offensive line.
With Leal out for this past Saturday’s scrimmage, Trey Gresh (r-So.) got all the work with the #2 offense. He then pulled his hamstring near the end of practice. Brian Rody, a r-freshman walk-on, has looked capable in limited work. He has more size (6-6, 221) and arm strength than Gresh, but he doesn’t have as much time in the system. Those two guys could have an interesting battle for the #3 spot on the depth chart in August.
I think that as of right now, the depth chart goes in this order: Logan Thomas, Mark Leal, Trey Gresh, Brian Rody, T.J. Shaw (r-Fr.)
