2010 Football Preview: Defensive Line

Bud Foster’s defense relies on getting penetration from the defensive line.
Winning battles in the trenches is the most important part of winning football
games, and Tech is hoping to continue to develop defensive line depth over the
remainder of August.

Tech’s defensive linemen play in a one-gap system, which means they try to
run through a specific gap as hard as they can and make plays in the backfield.
That requires a lot of energy, which means that Charley Wiles has to rotate his
defensive linemen to keep them fresh. Unfortunately, Tech’s depth up front
hasn’t been as good over the past couple of seasons.

Though the Hokies have some very young players up front this year, the
coaching staff is hopeful that the depth will be better. That remains to be
seen.
