2010 Football Preview: Offensive Backfield

When football practice opens tomorrow, running backs coach Billy Hite will
have the luxury of possessing the most talented backfield in the history of the
program. The Hokies have two legit all-stars, and they are in fact so deep at
running back that they might end up redshirting one of the top recruits in
school history.

With Ryan Williams and Darren Evans returning, Tech will have two of the most
productive backs in school history on the same team. They’ll have four backs
with major experience in college football games, and that’s not counting David
Wilson and his 59 carries as a true freshman last year.

Virginia Tech is the only team in college football with two players on their
roster who have rushed for 1,000 yards in a season. There are only two
backfields in the nation that have a strong argument to being the nation’s best:
Alabama and Virginia Tech. Ryan Williams and Darren Evans are Tech’s answer to
Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and sophomore sensation Trent Richardson.
