2009 Virginia Tech Football Preview: Quarterbacks

Quarterback is the most important position on the field, and the Hokies have
yet another controversy there this year. This time it’s not for the starting
position, but rather it’s a battle between Ju-Ju Clayton and Logan Thomas for
the right to be Tyrod Taylor’s top backup.

As the last two years have shown, backup quarterbacks are important. In 2007,
Tyrod Taylor went down against Duke, and the Hokies had Sean Glennon there to
step in. Against Florida State last year, both Taylor and Glennon got hurt, and
Cory Holt had to finish the game. The Hokies need to have a backup ready this
year, but that’s going to be very difficult.

Virginia Tech has been forced to turn to their backup quarterback because of
injury in six different seasons of the Beamer Bowl Era. In three seasons, 1998,
2000 and 2008, the Hokies had to go with their third string quarterback on at
least one occasion.
