Miller Discusses Change in Plans

Bassett (VA) lineman Andrew Miller fully expected to sign a letter of intent with Virginia Tech’s wrestling program this spring, with the plan being to be on wrestling scholarship for one year before moving over to a football scholarship. That all changed about a week before National Football Signing Day and, last Wednesday, the 6-4, 275-pound prospect’s name appeared with 20 other prospects on Tech’s football signing day list.

“Coach Beamer and Coach Stinespring came up about a week before Signing Day and told me what they wanted me to do,” recalled Miller. “It sounded good to me.”

If Miller, who is being recruited by Tech to play center, is needed to play or works his way into the rotation, he’ll now be able to play. Had he signed with Tech’s wrestling program, he wouldn’t have been able to play for Tech’s football program in 2009.

“I think they want him to give them some depth at center,” said Bassett head coach James Gilbert, who added that Miller could also be a long snapper. “They are not expecting him to start by any means, but they want to be prepared just in case. I’m almost sure they’d want to red-shirt him, but they want to be prepared.”
