Cody Journell ‘s first Division 1A offer turned out to be from his childhood favorite, and the Giles (Pearisburg, VA) star may not wait around to see what other options may come through. Earlier today, the 6-0, 175-pound rising senior place-kicker turned in a terrific performance at Virginia Tech’s camp and left with an official scholarship offer.
“I kicked off the tee, did some kick-offs and then kicked off the ground. I had never kicked off the ground before, but I did all right. I think that is what sealed the deal,” said Journell, who booted a 55-yard field goal from off the tee and a 50-yarder from off the ground at today’s camp.
“I went in and kicked and did what I could. Afterwards, I was more nervous because I didn’t know what would happen with the coaches. After the camp, I met with Coach Beamer and he told me he was offering me a full scholarship.”
Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer told the talented prospect to take his time with the decision, but a commitment seems imminent.
“I’m pretty sure I’m going to verbally commit because Virginia Tech has always been my number one school,” Journell said. “I was waiting to go to other camps if nothing happened at this one. Right now, I think I’m pretty much done.
“It is a big deal to get an offer from Virginia Tech. That is where I wanted to go ever since I was a little kid. I remember telling my dad I wanted to go there.”
An AP first-team all-state selection in 2007, Journell booted 10 field goals his junior season including a long of 54. Stay tuned, as we will check back with Cody throughout the coming days for more on a possible decision.
