For the last four years, Virginia Tech has had the luxury of having two of
the best linebackers in school history in Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi. Bud
Foster’s inside linebacker unit will look much different this fall, though
there is experience, maturity and talent at the position. However, there isn’t
much depth at any of the linebacker spots. The depth chart will be filled out
with walk-ons.

It’s not often that you lose two linebackers the caliber of Adibi and
Hall in the same season. They will be tough to replace, but we got a sneak
preview of the mike linebacker spot last year when Hall got hurt. Brett Warren
filled in and did a great job, and should have a very good senior season. Backer
is a little less uncertain, but it will be filled by a terrific athlete who
knows the system, and Cam Martin could have a breakout year at whip.

However, just take a look at this depth chart. If there are injuries, the
Hokies could be in serious trouble, especially if defensive tackle play isn’t
up to par.
