Not surprisingly, Group AAA, Division 5 state champion Stone Bridge High School (Ashburn, VA) has had its share of college coaches visiting over the past month. Stone Bridge head coach Mickey Thompson boasts a strong group of juniors, including three who have already landed at least one Division 1A scholarship offer.

“A lot of college coaches have been through getting junior film,” Thompson said. “As they review it, I expect a few more schools to come in with offers. After the combines and camps, hopefully a few more will come.”

6-2, 290-pound offensive lineman/defensive tackle Zach Thompson have also earned at least one Division 1A scholarship offer. N.C. State offered both prospects last week, and Thompson received an offer from the University of Virginia back in December.

Of 6-2, 205-pound quarterback Patrick Thompson, Coach Thompson said, “Coaches are surprised by how good he looks on film.”

Patrick Thompson, speedy running back Daniel Allen and 6-3, 210-pound linebacker Mike Olson are looking for impressive showings at combines and camps this spring and summer. Last season was Thompson’s first playing quarterback, Allen missed most of last season due to injury and size was a question with Olson. Olson has had a good offseason, though, adding 30 pounds to his 6-3 frame.

Virginia Tech, a program that has had success recruiting Stone Bridge over the past several years, may not be able to offer any more of Thompson’s juniors because of a tight scholarship situation. At least, Thompson is not expecting the Hokies to extend any more early offers.

“The Tech coaches told me that they will have only 10 or 11 scholarships this year,” Thompson said. “I haven’t gotten very much from them so far. [With respect to Brian Slay and Zach Thompson, the Tech coaches] told me they were not looking for many d-linemen this year, unless they pursue and then decide to offer late.”

Patrick and Zach Thompson are planning to check out some schools in the coming weeks and months. Coach Thompson mentioned Connecticut, North Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia as possibilities for junior days, but he adds that nothing has been finalized.
