Gulliver Prep (Miami, FL) center Gene Swindle made an official visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend. Tonight, the 6-11, 260-pound senior made his college decision, choosing Virginia Tech over offers from Penn State and South Florida.
“Gene sent a text message to my assistant saying ‘I’m going to be a Hokie,'” Gulliver Prep head coach Harry Gordon said. “I think he is going to call them tonight or tomorrow. So, unless he changes his mind, he is going to Virginia Tech.”
Swindle, who plans to sign a letter of intent in the Early Signing Period, had never visited Virginia Tech before the weekend.
“The visit went very well,” Gordon said. “He liked it a lot. He liked the campus. He liked the practice he saw. He liked the layout of everything. He was very impressed.”
Despite making a verbal commitment to South Florida last month, Swindle’s decision ultimately came down to Penn State and Virginia Tech. He made official visits to each program before coming to this decision.
Combining a large frame with solid potential, Swindle, who lost 40 pounds this offseason, enjoyed a breakout season on the AAU circuit. It was his performance throughout the spring and summer that drew college attention, with Virginia Tech only recently getting seriously into the picture.
Stay tuned for more tomorrow, as TechSideline.com will follow up with Coach Gordon and Swindle for more on this decision.
