Like Smithfield’s Dyrell Roberts, 5-11, 175-pound running back Tony Gregory was also making his first ever trip to Blacksburg this past weekend. The First Colonial (Virginia Beach, VA) speedster had an outstanding experience and, though he didn’t commit, he now puts the Hokies solidly at the top of his list.
“It was great,” Gregory said of the visit. “They said they have had a whole bunch of new stuff added on to the facilities. That stuff was great. The dorms, the field, the whole campus was great.”
Gregory left his home at 2:30 on Saturday morning, arriving at Virginia Tech at about 7:00 a.m. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by his Virginia Tech primary recruiter.
“When I got there, I saw Coach Newsome,” Gregory said. “He introduced me to all the coaches. Then he took me to go see Coach Beamer. I talked one-on-one with Coach Beamer. My mom asked questions. He was telling her how it would be at Virginia Tech. Not only do you go there for football, but to get a great degree also. My mom was really impressed.”
Gregory did not commit, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t think about it…strongly.
“I wanted to commit, but my mom thinks I should give it some more time,” Gregory said.
Gregory, who has received scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Marshall and Northern Illinois, says Tech is “at the top” of his list. He is drawing serious interest from Clemson and North Carolina as well and plans to camp at both of those schools in the near future.
He hopes to return to Virginia Tech later this summer as well.
Gregory felt he performed well at Virginia Tech’s camp. He noted one player in particularly who impressed him, Virginia Tech LB commit Jake Johnson.
“His size is real big and he can move real well for his size,” Gregory said of Jake Johnson.
