Virginia Tech is just one of the programs keeping a close eye on Hargrave Military Academy wide receiver Ben Finney. Finney, a standout football and basketball player for I.C. Norcom (Portsmouth, VA) last year, may have several 1A options by the time his stint at Hargrave is over.
“I think I am doing ok this year,” said Finney, who racked up three touchdown receptions in Hargrave’s first two games of the year. “It could be better.”
At 6-4, 215 pounds, the standout Tidewater athlete impressed the Hargrave coaches with his size and athleticism prior to the beginning of the season. Finney played tight end and wide receiver for Norcom.
“He’s a big, tall, rangy receiver,” Hargrave Head Coach Robert Prunty said of Finney in August. “Justin Harper comes to mind.”
Prunty said back in August that Tech was showing significant interest in Finney. He is interested in the Hokies, but what is Tech’s interest right now? And for what sport?
“I like Virginia Tech,” Finney said. “I’m interested in them and they are recruiting me the hardest in football.”
Finney plans to be at Hargrave for an entire year. After football season, he will play for the Postgraduate basketball team. He is considering both sports on the next level.
“I haven’t made my mind up yet as to what sport I want to play in college,” Finney said. “I do have offers for both sports.”
The talented dual-sport athlete was asked if he had any favorite schools at this point in his recruitment.
“I don’t have any favorite schools,” Finney said.
Academically, Finney says he needs to improve the math section on the SAT.
“I’m not qualified yet, but I am working on that,” Finney said.
Stay tuned, as we will check back with Finney next month for more on his recruitment and to find out Virginia Tech’s level of interest.
