Virginia Tech has landed its first verbal commitment for the 2008 class. The commitment comes from an in-state standout RB/DB who is currently classified for the 2007 class, but who will attend prep school before enrolling at Virginia Tech.

“You can change [D.J.] to a commitment to Virginia Tech,” Patrick Henry assistant coach Scott Brown said via e-mail. “D.J. committed earlier today as a part of the 2008 recruiting class. He will be attending prep school for the 2007/2008 school year at Fork Union or Hargrave.”

Thomas had been leaning heavily towards committing to Virginia Tech. In a report on TSL last week, the 5-9, 170-pound recruit said “Virginia Tech is very much in the lead. I don’t know when I will commit just yet. I was thinking about doing it in about a week or so, but now I don’t know. I’m just looking for the right moment and the right feeling. I do plan on giving my commitment to Virginia Tech, though. It is a great program and I’ve liked them better and better since they offered me. I don’t know when, but I do plan on going to Virginia Tech.”

Last season, Thomas was named to the Richmond Times-Dispatch first-team all-metro squad as a utility player. He rushed for 1,318 yards and had 161 yards receiving. On defense, he made nine interceptions.
