Hampton High School quarterback Tyrod Taylor became Virginia Tech’s 12th verbal commitment on Friday evening when he chose the Hokies over his other finalist, the Florida Gators. We’ve all seen Taylor’s name linked to wide receiver prospects Jay Smith, Mark Barnes, and even Arrelious Benn. But what running back is Taylor trying to lure to Blacksburg? Find out inside.

Taylor’s announcement came live on WAVY-TV 10 from Crabber’s Restaurant and Sports Lounge in Hampton. When sports director Bruce Rader asked Taylor the big question, Taylor responded like so many other past recruits by saying, “The University of Virginia Tech.”

When Taylor made his announcement, he pulled a Virginia Tech hat out of a bag as the room erupted in cheers from his family, friends, as well as some Hokie fans who made the trip.

Taylor later fielded questions from reporters about the recruiting process, as well as his future plans at Virginia Tech. He proved to be a man of few words, but Virginia Tech fans have a reason to be very excited about some of his comments.

When asked if he would try to bring some other highly touted prospects to Blacksburg, Taylor responded, “I’ve been talking to Mark Barnes and Jay Smith for awhile. I also just got Arrelious Benn’s number, and I’m going to call him tonight. I’m going to talk to Caleb King also.”

Mark Barnes, from South Carolina, and Jay Smith, from Virginia, are both wide receiver prospects ranked in the top 100 nationally. They have long been mentioned with Taylor, but Benn and King are new names. Benn is also one of the top receivers in the nation, and the #19 player overall by Rivals.com. King is the top rated running back in the country, and the #4 recruit overall.

One of the rumors flying around Taylor is that he may enroll at Virginia Tech in January. Is that true?

“Yeah, it’s something that I’ve been thinking about. But I haven’t decided yet one way or the other.”

Virginia Tech recruiting coordinator Jim Cavanaugh has built a very solid reputation with his recruiting prowess in the “757”. Did he play a big part in Taylor’s decision?

“It was Coach Cav, but it was also Coach Newsome as well. They both played a big part in my decision.”
