Andrew Lanier , a 6-5, 235-pound tight end/defensive end standout out of Dorman High School (Roebuck, S.C.), verbally committed to Virginia Tech according to Dorman head coach Dave Gutshall. Lanier is the third player from yesterday’s camp to commit to the Hokies.

“I was by Andrew that he did [commit to Virginia Tech],” Gutshall said.

Lanier plays a variety of positions on offense, but projects as a tight end or defensive end on the next level.

“He’s big. He’s 6-5, 235 pounds,” Gutshall said. “He plays tight end and defensive end for us. He’s such a key to our offense. He lines up everywhere. Actually, he’s more like an h-back, but we’ve lined him up at tight end, fullback and this year he’ll even line up at running back. He has good speed. He’s a tremendous blocker. He has great hands. He’s as good an open field block as I’ve seen and maybe the best we’ve ever had.”

Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and South Carolina were among the schools showing significant interest in Lanier. Coach says Virginia had “just started to come in lately, too.”

Gutshall says Lanier has met NCAA qualification standards already.
