With Virginia Tech’s recruiting objectives defined and the May evaluation period in process, VT’s recruiting target board is taking shape. By June, the initial list of players that the Hokie coaches will pursue at each position should be completely set. We take an early look at figuring out Virginia Tech’s major recruiting targets. Today, we’ll take a look at the defense.

In this two-part series, the purpose is not to give any indication of player ratings or their likelihood of picking Virginia Tech. The focus is to present you with a list of top targets, as we see it right now, for reference as you check out recruiting updates and databases.

Note that this is not, of course, the official Virginia Tech target board.

Defensive Line (Projection: 3 or 4)

VT will likely streamline their efforts this class along the defensive line
after taking six recruits in ’06, in addition to Steven Friday. The coaches
landed depth, talent and versatility on the defensive line with the 2006 class,
and they will be looking for similar players in 2007. The likely path the
coaches will take will be to add a weakside defensive end, a strongside
end/tackle and a pure defensive tackle to continue adding depth along the DL.

Here are some recruits on the VT board at the DL position:

  • Jamar Jackson, 6-4, 225, VA (no offer) – weakside DE
  • Byron Clear, 6-5, 210, VA (no offer) – weakside DE
  • Devon Still, 6-5, 250, DE (offer) – DE/DT
  • Cliff Mathews, 6-5, 230, SC (offer) – DE/DT
  • Tydreke Powell, 6-3, 295, NC (offer)–DT

Other players of note on the defensive line include Ryan Houston (NC),
Malcolm Hall (VA), Travian Robertson (NC) and Carlos Dunlap (SC).

Linebacker (Projection: 3 or 4)

VT has linebacker as one of the top priorities in this year’s recruiting
class. The breakdown needs become even greater at both whip and backer. At mike,
VT has Vince Hall, Brett Warren, Demetrius Taylor and Andrew Bowman, as well as
Nekos Brown from the ’06 class. The coaches will be looking for a pure outside
linebacker at whip, an athletic inside linebacker for backer, and a versatile LB
that could play either outside or inside with size and athleticism.

Here are some recruits on the VT board at the LB position:
