5-9, 170-pound Patrick Henry (Ashland, VA) star D.J. Thomas made an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech for its spring game on April 15th. It was the only unofficial trip he has made this spring, and the trip appears to have gone very well. Virginia Tech is the only school to have offered thus far.
“I was at Virginia Tech for the spring game,” Thomas said. “That’s been my only visit. It was ok. Coach Cav introduced me to the running backs coach for the first time, which was pretty cool.”
Does coach Billy Hite’s talk with Thomas mean that Virginia Tech is recruiting D.J. as a running back?
“I think they are recruiting me as an athlete,” Thomas said. “The running backs coach told me they are low on running backs this year, so if I came on there could be a chance I could play there and maybe contribute as a freshman or sophomore.”
Thomas is receiving interest from Duke, which is supposed to stop by his school during the Evaluation period, and Maryland in addition to his Tech offer. He wants to wait to make his decision, but acknowledges that Virginia Tech could be the destination ultimately.
“I want to wait until after the football season,” Thomas said of his decision. “Virginia Tech could end up being the school. They are my top school right now.”
This spring, Thomas has been very focused on improving his academics and his efforts have paid off as he earned very good scores on his most recent report card. Academics is something the Tech staff told Thomas to focus on during his visit to Blacksburg earlier this month.
Thomas is not only thriving in the classroom, though. He is doing quite well in track and field as well. Two weeks ago, he ran a personal best 100 meters time of 10.93. It was in the rain, no less. Earlier this year, he posted a personal best indoor long jump of 21 feet, 8.25 inches.
With an eye towards football season, Thomas works out with teammates following track practice. His aim is to get bigger and stronger for next season.
“After track, I go to the Y and run and lift weights with some of our seniors,” Thomas said. “I do sprints on the treadmill to keep in shape for track and I lift weights to get ready for football. I’ve gotten bigger since last season. Right now, I’m up to over 170 pounds. I want to get to 185 by the season’s start.”
