Virginia Tech is one of several Division 1A programs to officially offer North Miami Beach (Miami, FL) star Doug Wiggins . Wiggins, a second-team 6A all-state and first-team all-Dade county selection as a junior, will be a rare 4-year starter for head coach Jeff Bertani’s program. Wiggins, who also played quarterback this past season, has played defensive back since his freshman season.
“He’s an explosive kid,” Bertani said of the 5-11, 185-pound Wiggins. “He’s always making plays. He’s always around the football whether it’s on offense or defense. In his junior season, Wiggins, who runs a 4.5 in the 40 according to Bertani, threw for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 346 yards (7.9 yards per carry) and scored two touchdowns. Defensively, he had 86 tackles and seven interceptions. He has also seen time at wide receiver and running back.
With his versatility, Wiggins could end up on either side of the ball on the next level.
“He’s being recruited more as a receiver/defensive back,” Bertani said. “I know Virginia Tech’s probably looking at him as a defensive back.”
