Lee County (Sanford, N.C.) defensive end Joey Hall made an official visit to Virginia Tech last weekend. Since Virginia Tech is his childhood favorite, Hall was extremely excited to have the opportunity to go on an official visit but may have been more excited about the actual experience. Now, he will wait to see if the Hokies come through with an offer.
“It was definitely the best time I’ve had on a visit,” said Hall, who has taken an official visit to Elon and unofficial visits to ECU, UNC, N.C. State and Wake Forest. “They treated me real nice. My host was Ed Wang. The players were real classy and they were real nice people. They take care of the recruits.”
Hall has verbally committed to Elon, but an offer from Virginia Tech would change his decision.
“I know I’m on the wait list right now to get a scholarship offer,” Hall said, referring to Virginia Tech. “Coach Beamer said I could find out as early as this Saturday until as late as next Wednesday. He said they have 17 commitments and they’ve already offered the final eight spots. From the sound of it, I think I might be a high candidate for an offer if a spot opens up.
“Virginia Tech’s the team I’ve liked since I was like five feet tall. I never thought I’d be in these shoes right now. If they offer, I don’t know what I would do. Well, I know what I would do but I would be extremely excited.”
After seeing Hall’s highlight tape last week, the Virginia Tech coaches wanted to bring him on campus for the visit. As a senior, the 6-3, 260-pound Hall racked up 75 tackles including 10 tackles-for-loss and 10 sacks. He was 3-time defensive player of the week.
“My engine never dies,” said Hall, who didn’t get a chance to get as much exposure last spring. Because of track and field obligations, he missed all of the Shrine Bowl combines. “I have quick hands and I’m kind of mean out there. I’m being recruited as a defensive end, but I think I could get up to about 290 on the next level. I’m about 90-percent sure I’ll end up at defensive tackle.”
In addition to Virginia Tech, Virginia and Wake Forest have expressed some interest as well. This weekend, Hall is scheduled to take an official visit to Western Carolina but may change those plans if Virginia or Wake offers a visit…or, if Virginia Tech offers a scholarship.
