Maury (Norfolk, VA) star Kam Chancellor decided he didn’t need this weekend to make his collegiate decision. After receiving a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech last week, the 6-4, 215-pound quarterback/athlete decided to accept and has become the 12th player to verbally commit to the Hokies in the 2006 class.
“He has committed to Virginia Tech,” Maury head coach Dealton Cotton confirmed this afternoon.
As a senior this year, Chancellor threw for over 2,000 yards and rushed for 400 in leading Maury to a 9-2 record. He is being recruited by Virginia Tech as a quarterback, but he has the athleticism and the work ethic to end up at a different position if necessary.
Coach Cotton certainly believes his star can make it at quarterback on the Division 1A level.
“I think colleges are really missing the boat on him as far as a quarterback,” Cotton said in an interview last month. “Most are looking at him as a safety. I think he is a solid athlete, he’s competitive and he’s a leader. He’s the type of kid that would make sure we would win. He was the hardest working kid on our team and he’s probably the hardest working kid I’ve ever coached. He refuses to lose and he’s blessed with a lot of physical abilities.”
Chancellor becomes the third player from the state of Virginia to commit to the Hokies in this year’s class.
