A relatively new name to the Hokies target list is 6-7, 250-pound St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA) standout Richard Graham. Graham, who played tight end in high school, is being recruited as an offensive tackle and is very likely to get an official offer when he makes his official visit to Blacksburg this weekend.

“Virginia Tech came to my school about a month or two ago,” Graham said. “They sat me down and said that they liked me a lot. Then Coach Cav called about two weeks ago and said he was going to show up at one of my basketball games. I talked to Coach Cav after he saw me play basketball and he said they are pretty much going to offer me a scholarship. He said the offensive line coach has given the recommendation to Coach Beamer to offer me, but Coach Beamer wants to meet me face to face before he offers me formally.”

In addition to Virginia Tech, Graham has received heavy interest from Princeton and Harvard. Both Ivy league schools have indicated that he would be accepted if he were to commit. Vanderbilt is also making some last-minute inquiries and Division I-AA JMU and Furman have offered officially.

While Virginia Tech is certainly high on Graham’s list, he says he will likely not commit on this weekend’s trip.

“I’ve never seen Virginia Tech before, so I don’t know what it’s like,” said Graham. “I’m going on the trip with my mom. My dad won’t be there, and he wants to talk to me first before I make any decision. I won’t make a decision this weekend, but I probably will have one in the day or so after.”

Of this weekend’s visit, Graham says he’s “excited. I’m excited to check everything out.”

A Division I-A offer didn’t seem likely for Graham at the end of last Spring. Then, just before he was to attend his first summer football camp (at Clemson), he suffered a serious foot injury.

“I was all set to go start my summer football camps,” Graham said. “I was going to go to a lot of camps too. Clemson was going to be my first one. Four days before I was supposed to go, we had one final basketball practice before the summer. My mom didn’t want me to do it, but it was the last one and they needed me because I know all of the players. I was just going to walk through it, but I went to get a rebound and came down on someone’s foot. I tore some ligaments in my foot.”

Graham was able to attend UNC’s football camp and impressed Coach John Bunting.
