Verbal commitments typically start rolling in starting in the month of December. Rocky Mount (NC) cornerback Stephan Virgil will be one of those decision-makers this month, as he hopes to have a decision very soon.
“I hope to decide sometime at the end of this week,” Virgil said. “It’s between UNC and Virginia Tech.”
Virgil wasn’t about to provide any hints as to which way he may be leaning, saying “I’m not going to say right now” when asked if one school was ahead of the other. He has taken an official visit to VT but has not made one to UNC. He has visited UNC several times unofficially.
Over the past week, several Shrine Bowl participants were trying to sway his decision towards one school in particular.
“UNC had some guys who had committed and they were trying to get me to go there,” Virgil said. “But I’m thinking about Virginia Tech too.”
The 5-11, 165-pound Virgil racked up 98 tackles with 2 sacks and made 4 interceptions in his 2004 season. He plays safety in high school but could end up as a cornerback on the next level. He is being recruited as a defensive back by both of his finalists.
Virgil commented on his experience at the NC/SC Shrine Bowl last week.
“The experience for me was real good,” Virgil said. “It was good meeting other players in North Carolina. Going to the Shriners Hospital and meeting the kids showed me that they aren’t any different than anybody else. They were all in good spirits. That was a great experience.”
