Newnan (GA) defensive tackle prospect Sergio Render arrived in Blacksburg last Friday, not knowing too much about the Hokies other than what he has seen on television. He left on Sunday knowing exactly what Tech has to offer, and he was impressed.
“I loved it,” Render said of his official visit to Virginia Tech. “I really enjoyed it. I loved the area. I really liked the country. I’m a country boy, and it reminded me of my hometown. I liked the mountains. I liked the fans at the game. The players welcomed me and I enjoyed them.”
The 6-4, 290-pound Render is being recruited by Virginia Tech as a defensive tackle. That’s one of the reasons the Hokies received an official visit, and one of the reasons they are now #1 on his list.
The main reason Tech is at the top now is because of the official visit experience.
“They are #1,” Render said. “It’s because of the experience I had up there. When I got up there I just felt like I was still at home.”
Render stated that Florida State, the team he originally committed to, is “really not in the mix” because they want him on offense and he wants to play defense. Mississippi and Arkansas are the other main schools in the mix, and Render may take visits to those schools before making a decision.
Noland Burchette was Render’s host for the weekend. What did Burchette tell Render?
“He just told me that Virginia Tech is a great place to be,” Render said. “He said it’s great to be a Hokie.”
