Darrius Heyward-Bey had previously wanted to wait until after his senior season to make a decision. Now, he is thinking more about committing before or during the season so he can focus on academics.

“I’ve been thinking that waiting until after the season to make a decision may not be the best thing for me,” Heyward-Bey said. “After the season is over, I’ll have my schoolwork to focus on and I can’t have coaches coming in and calling all the time. That’s probably not good for me. Now I’m thinking about committing before or maybe during the season.”

McDonogh’s (Owings Mill, MD) 6-3, 195-pound, super-athletic wide receiver claims somewhere around 10 or 11 scholarship offers. He had been receiving some interest from other programs including Florida and Virginia Tech, but says that he will concentrate mainly on the schools that have offered thus far.

“I’m not worried about it,” Heyward-Bey said about getting more scholarship offers. “I figure I have offers from all the schools I’m going to get offers from. I’m just going to look at those schools that have offered. If another school comes in I might take a glance but I’ll probably just continue to focus on the ones that have already offered. I’ll focus on the 10 or 11 I have and move on from there.”

Heyward-Bey has not decided if he will make any official visits before committing.

“Official visits might be tough to do because we play a lot of our games on Saturday,” Heyward-Bey said. “I’d have to do it after the season. If I have the chance to see 1 or 2 during the season I might, but I’ve already made a lot of unofficial visits so I know a lot about the schools that have offered me. I’ve been to UNC, Duke, Maryland, Virginia and Alabama. Official visits are not big for me anyway. I should probably use that time to study.”

Heyward-Bey says he may narrow his list down soon. He will sit down with his Mother and with McDonogh Head Coach Dominic Damico to make his initial cut. Academics will be a big part of his decision-making process.

“I’ll probably just narrow it down with my Mom and my coach soon,” Heyward-Bey said. “Maybe sometime soon, like next week, I’ll sit down and take a good look at the schools that have offered me. Right now I don’t really have a list of favorites or anything.”

“When I narrow my list, I’ve got to look at location. I’m not big on staying close to home, but we’ll see.
