Duquesne (PA) 5-11, 215-pound running back Shane Brooks has worked hard this off-season to improve his speed. Originally clocking consistently at a 4.6 in the 40 yard dash, Brooks has shaved some time off his 40 just before the start of his senior season.

“I’m down to a 4.50,” Brooks said. “I haven’t done anything different. I’m just running a lot. I run 3 times a week and work-out with the team 3 times a week. I have lost a couple of pounds. I’m at 215 right now. I didn’t have to lose weight to make myself quicker. I’m fast with or without the weight.”

A faster Brooks spells trouble for opposing defense. It also no doubt excites the schools recruiting the tough, versatile back. The schools heavily involved and who have offered at this point include Virginia, Maryland, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, Missouri, Indiana and Connecticut, among others.

Brooks says not much has changed in terms of his recruiting situation. UVa remains his leader and he still wants to wait until after his senior season to take official visits and make his decision.

“Nothing’s changed [with my recruiting],” Brooks said. “My favorite is still Virginia. Behind them I like Maryland, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, Missouri, Indiana and Connecticut. I’m going to try and narrow it down by the first couple of weeks of school. I’ll set my visits up during the season and make my visits after the season.”

Several factors stand out for the Cavaliers. They include the coaching staff, the campus, and the recruiting class.

“I like the coaching staff,” Brooks said of UVa. “They send letters everyday. I get letters from Coach Dex and Coach Rocco. They just ask how I’m doing and tell me to keep working hard in summer school. Coach Dex is a good guy. He talks about how they use running backs and how I fit in to what they like to do. He’s a nice guy and a good coach. I liked it down there [during an unofficial visit on June 12th]. I like how everything was laid out. And I like how their recruiting is going right now.”

Brooks says he wants to make all 5 official visits. He says he will likely decide before Signing Day but does not know when he will have a decision. Right now, he is not sure who he will officially visit. Though he likes Virginia, he admits anything can change.

“No, not yet,” Brooks said when asked if he knew of any school or schools that he would definitely get an official
