Virginia just keeps on rolling in the verbal commitments, today receiving a pledge from Salem (Virginia Beach, VA) tight end/defensive end Antonio Appleby . Appleby is one of the top defensive prospects in the state of Virginia.
“He has verbally committed to UVa,” Salem Head Coach Vincent Pugh said. “He made the decision last night. He and his mother visited there unofficially on Saturday and he has been thinking about it ever since. He was ready to get his decision out of the way.”
UVa is recruiting Appleby, an athletic 6-4, 230 pound prospect, to play outside linebacker in the 3-4 system. As a junior defensive end, he racked up 75 tackles with 14 sacks and 23 quarterback pressures last season.
“A big part of Antonio’s decision was position,” Pugh said. “He felt good about where he is going to play at Virginia. He’s going to be an outside linebacker but will be a rush end on passing situations.”
Appleby chose UVa over offers from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Maryland, Syracuse, and West Virginia. An excellent student, Appleby carries a 3.3 GPA and scored an 1,130 on the SAT.
