Without question, one of the true leaders, on and off the field, of Floyd Kellam High School’s varsity football team is Demetrius Taylor . Taylor is not only the team’s best player, but he is an excellent student off the field.

According to Floyd Kellam’s Head Football Coach Chris DeWitt, Taylor’s family support is what makes him such an excellent student athlete.

“His discipline comes from a real good upbringing,” DeWitt said. “He’s got a great support system with his family. He not only shows his character on the field, but in the classroom. He’s always received A’s and B’s. He’ll take AP courses next year.”

On the field, Taylor is a 6-1 (though he’s close to 6-2), 220 pound middle linebacker/fullback with excellent speed and smarts. As a junior, he led the team in rushing touchdowns. He averaged 10 tackles-per-game on defense.

“He can run like no one his size,” DeWitt said. “He’s our fastest sprinter. He runs a 4.5, but we’ve timed him under 4.5 before. He can bench press 355 pounds, and his squat is huge. We do hand-cleans, and Demetrius can hand-clean 325 pounds, which is our highest ever.

“What separates him on the field is his knowledge of the game and his discipline. We need him to do a lot of stuff out there, and he has the discipline to stay within our system. His stats won’t amaze you, but he’s playing very effective within our defensive scheme. He does what he’s supposed to do.”

Most schools, including the one that has offered him a scholarship, are recruiting Taylor as a linebacker. Some like him as a running back or fullback on the next level as well.

Virginia Tech, led by primary recruiter Bryan Stinespring, is the school that has extended an early scholarship offer, and Coach DeWitt says that the Hokies have been very high on Taylor for a few years.

“Virginia Tech has been all over him,” DeWitt said. “They’ve offered him already. Coach Stinespring has been on him hard core from day one. Maryland has popped in. Notre Dame has talked to me on the phone. Duke is showing strong interest, NC State is really hot on him, and UVa is recruiting him too. UVa’s got film on him. They are interested. Coach Bob Price stopped by to talk about him.”

When asked if Demetrius had any favorites, Coach DeWitt mentioned that Virginia Tech as a team Taylor is very high on. He also indicated that Demetrius will likely want to see many more schools before
