Virginia Tech received a commitment last night from John I Leonard High School’s (FL) versatile athlete Damian Sims. The 5-10, 180 pound Sims chose Virginia Tech over offers from Kansas State, Mississippi, and others.
“Yeah I committed to Virginia Tech last night,” Sims said. “It’s something that’s been on my mind for a little while. There has been something just telling me to go to Virginia Tech, so I just followed my heart and committed.”
The coaching staff and tradition were also two main factors in why Sims decided to choose the Hokies.
“I really like the coaching staff,” Sims said. “And they have a tradition of great players, which they have continued.”
As a senior, Sims played both the cornerback and running back positions for John I Leonard, excelling in both. His 4.37 40 speed (time during Miami Nike Camp) and quick feet make him an asset on either side of the ball, however he was recruited as a likely cornerback for Virginia Tech. Playing cornerback would suit him just fine.
“I’ll do whatever the coaching staff tells me to do,” Sims said. “If they need me at center, then I’ll play center (laughs). I’ll play anywhere they want me to.”
Sims becomes Virginia Tech’s 17th verbal commitment for the 2004 recruiting class. Damian says he “doesn’t think” he will make any more official visits except for the one to Virginia Tech, which is scheduled for January 30th.
Academically, he is on track to qualify.
