Westfield (Chantilly, VA) capped off a storybook season with a Division 6 Championship title, defeating Landstown 35-14 in the title game last weekend. In the game, wide receiver Eddie Royal had four catches for 45 yards, two rushes for 15 yards and a touchdown, and scored one touchdown on an electrifying punt return.
It was a typical game for one of the state’s most explosive prospects. Royal finished his senior season with 45 catches for 920 yards and eleven receiving touchdowns. He added two scores on the ground and even more through punt/kick returns.
With his excellent high school career completed, Royal looks forward to focusing on where he will play football for the next four years.
“During the season, I didn’t really think about it that much,” Royal said of recruiting. “Now that the season is over, I’ve been thinking about it more and more. I have a lot of coaches coming in all the time and I have more time to think about it also. I’m ready to get this going.”
Royal, who holds seven Division I-A scholarship offers, has scheduled official visits to Virginia on January 17th, Virginia Tech on January 24th, and Marshall on January 31st. Currently, four teams appear to be the primary contenders to land the state’s top receiver. Virginia Tech had been the clear favorite in recent updates, however Royal wants to give each school a fair shot heading into his official visits.
“Right now I’m about neutral,” Royal said. “Virginia Tech, Marshall, Tennessee, and Virginia are my top four teams right now. Everyday in recruiting I have a lot of things going through my head. I know that before I take my visits, in my mind I’m going to give every school equal opportunity. I’m going to weigh all of my options. It’s the biggest decision of my life, so I need to take my time with it.”
Virginia Tech and Virginia are turning up the heat, as the Hokies made an in-home visit earlier this week with Coach Frank Beamer while Virginia recruiting coach Al Golden visited Westfield last week. Royal commented on the Tech in-home, which appears to have gone really well.
“Coach Beamer, Coach Ward, and Coach Rogers came into my house [Tuesday night],” Royal said. “They talked to me a lot about playing time. They said they could see me on the field next year returning...
