Virginia has become the latest school to make an official scholarship offer to St. Peter’s Prep (NJ) standout Leo Ferrine . Ferrine, a 6-2, 190 pound prospect with blazing speed (he has been clocked at 22.3 in the 200 meters in track), now boasts written offers from Virginia, Penn State, Boston College, and Pittsburgh.
“I got a written offer from Virginia this week,” said Ferrine. “They were recruiting me as a cornerback, but Coach [Al] Golden mentioned to me recently that they may want me as a wide receiver. They are now looking at me as an athlete.”
In addition to the four schools above, Ferrine is hearing from Notre Dame, Rutgers, and Virginia Tech, though the Hokies have not spoken to him in a little under a month. He wants to keep his options open for other schools, however he does know at least three programs he would like to officially visit.
“The three right now I definitely want to take official visits to are Virginia, Notre Dame, and Penn State,” said Ferrine. “I like those three because, basically, I know if I get a diploma from any one of them I can do anything. Virginia is the number one public school, and the other two are just as good. Education is really important to me because football might not always be there.
“I’m pretty open other than those three schools. I want to keep all of my options open. I think I’ve had a pretty good season, so I want to see who else starts to call me. My coach has been sending out tapes.”
Ferrine admits he will focus more on his decision, specifically setting up official visits, once his season is over.
“I don’t really think about it too much,” said Ferrine. “After the season, I’ll get real focused on my decision. I don’t want to think on it too much until I have a chance to sit down after the season. I would like to take all five visits before deciding.”
Playing free safety, wide receiver, and return-man for St. Peter’s, Ferrine has been a key reason why his team is undefeated at 8-0. Before last weekend’s 28-12 victory over Bayonne, the St. Peter’s defense had not allowed a single point all season.
Want an amazing statistic? How about this…Ferrine has scored a touchdown six different ways this season. He has scored on a fumble recovery, an interception, a kick return, punt return, rushing, and receiving. He has recorded five interceptions from the free safety position, and has 15 receptions and four touchdowns...
