Northside High School star Brandon Holland committed earlier today to Virginia Tech, his long time favorite school. It appears Virginia Tech is more than excited to have the 6-5, 280 pound defensive end in the fold as well.
“I just got off the phone with Coach Beamer,” said Holland. “He said they are thrilled to get me, and that I was one of the top recruits that they offered.”
Coach Beamer and the rest of the Virginia Tech coaches were one of the main reasons they have always been at the top of the list.
“I’ve always favored Virginia Tech,” said Holland. “The coaches are so nice. They called every week to talk to me and my parents. They made me feel like they really wanted me. They stressed how much they wanted me to come there. Plus, I’ve been a Hokies fan forever. It’s basically been my dream to go there. The other schools recruiting me were great, but they weren’t at the level of Virginia Tech.”
Virginia Tech has indicated to Holland that they want him as a defensive end. With his size and athletic ability, he could easily play a number of different positions.
Even he is not sure where he will end up playing for the Hokies.
“They tell me defensive end, but actually I think I could play anything,” said Holland. “Maybe I’ll play running back (laughs). Who knows really.”
After making his commitment to Virginia Tech, Holland now hopes to become an ace recruiter for the Hokies…starting this weekend.
“I’m going to try to help bring in some more players,” said Holland. “I’ll be at the Miami game this weekend so we’ll see.”
Holland becomes the sixth commitment for the 2004 class. He chose the Hokies over offers from Clemson, Maryland, and West Virginia. He will cancel all official visits.
Excited for Miami
Why is Brandon Holland so excited to see the Miami game this weekend?
“My parents are coming with me to the game,” said Holland. “They are very happy that I chose Virginia Tech. This will be the first actual game they have ever been to with me. It’s impossible to get them to come because my Dad always works on weekends. But they are both coming, and I’m excited.”
