Matawan (NJ) defensive tackle Carl Howard is enjoying an excellent senior year both on and off the field. On the field, his team has six wins to zero losses. The 6-6, 280 pound Howard has made 43 tackles, anchoring the stout Matawan defense.

“Everything’s going great,” said Howard of Matawan’s season thus far. “We’re 6-0. It’s so cool that we’re winning and I can say we’re 6-0. Our defense is shutting teams down. We’re number one in the Shore (district) in defense. I want that icing on the cake though, and that’s a state championship.”

Off the field, his year is going just as well. He estimates he has received 18 official scholarship offers.

“I have received 18 full scholarship offers,” said Howard. “Recently, I got one from Nebraska. That’s the only new development in my recruiting.”

Howard wants to make all five official visits before he makes his decision. Right now, Virginia Tech, Miami (FL), Michigan State, NC State, and Rutgers are the ones he is thinking about visiting.

No visits have been set.

“I’m going to take all five trips,” said Howard. “I’m not just going to take officials, I’m going to take some unofficial visits too. Right now, I want to take official visits to Virginia Tech, Miami (FL), NC State, Michigan State, and Rutgers. Those aren’t set, but the ones I’m thinking about right now.”

All of the schools mentioned above have offered official scholarships except for Miami, who has verbally offered the talented big man. Howard says the Hurricanes are waiting on his first SAT score before officially offering a scholarship. He takes the test for the first time on November 1st.

Though he stated those schools could change, one team he is pretty confident about is Virginia Tech.

“I’m definitely going to visit Virginia Tech…that’s a promise,” said Howard. “I am real excited about Virginia Tech. I really like their defense.”

While Howard did mention the schools he would likely visit, he was quick to say he does not want to name any favorites at this time.

“I’m not going to name any favorites or anything until I’m able to see all of the schools,” said Howard.

Howard is one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the East. He has excellent speed for his size, running a 4.8 in the 40 yard
