Virginia Tech wrestler Hunter Bolen (174 pounds) was named ACC Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, adding to the success achieved by the program in Tony Robie’s first year as head coach.
“Hunter put a lot of effort and hard work in this past season and we’re happy to see him earn this award,” Robie said in a statement. “The best part about Hunter is that his best wrestling is still ahead of him and we’re all excited to see him progress on the mat.”
Bolen finished this season with a record of 21-12 and was one of only 16 freshmen in the nation to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Bolen placed second in the ACC Championships at 174 pounds and finished the season ranked 16th in his weight class.
Bolen’s award gives Virginia Tech wrestling yet another accomplishment for this season. The Hokies placed first at the ACC Championships and had three All-American wrestlers at the NCAA Championships. David McFadden and Zach Zavatsky both placed in the top-eight in their weight classes, while senior Jared Haught placed second in his weight class. Overall, Virginia Tech finished eighth at the NCAA Championships.
