The bright lights of the 2000 Sugar Bowl were taking their toll. Upstart Virginia Tech had been in New Orleans for some time ahead of its BCS national championship matchup against favored Florida State, and the media crush, particularly on freshman sensation Michael Vick, had become increasingly overwhelming.
So Corey Moore, Tech’s star defensive end, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame last month, hatched a plan. He’d absorb the media glare with what he hoped would be a measured bit of kayfabe, ideally loosening up the Hokies before the biggest game in program history.
Boy, did he get everyone’s attention.
In a brief, expletive-filled interview session that lives on in YouTube infamy, Moore played the part of irritated athlete to perfection, figuratively frothing at the mouth as he snarled back answers to a shocked contingent at the bowl’s media day.
