When defensive tackle Kelvin Gilliam officially visited Virginia Tech on Dec. 15, it had been by his estimate more than four years since he’d set foot in Blacksburg. Then, Gilliam was a high school junior at Highland Springs (Va.).

This time, as a college transfer from Oklahoma, there was a different feel.

“The first time I went to Virginia Tech, you could just tell the vibe wasn’t there,” Gilliam said. “A lot of recruits weren’t from Virginia. Now, I’m like, people are gunning for a spot at Virginia Tech. The momentum they have, the staff they’ve put together, it just all makes sense about going there.”
