Did Tyler Bowen figure it out against Pitt? (Ivan Morozov)

1) Is it that hard to pick which quarterback gives you the best chance to win based on their strengths and those of the supporting cast? It seems like this is the second time we have found that out by accident, over two different coaching staffs, over a short period of time. – Maroon Effect

Chris Coleman: When the offense you are running isn’t the right offense, it can certainly hamper your decision-making progress. The offense that Virginia Tech was running pre-Pitt was more suited for Grant Wells. It’s an offense that Drones seemed to struggle with in practice and games.

I went over his passing numbers after the Marshall game. At that point, he ranked outside the top 100 in yards per attempt and quarterback rating and wasn’t even close to the top 100 in either ranking. He had one touchdown pass and one interception. To top it off, between the spring and August, he threw one touchdown pass and four interceptions during portions of practice that the media was allowed to watch (including the spring game).

The one touchdown was thrown directly at Derrick Canteen, who dropped it into the hands of Ali Jennings, so it really should have been no touchdowns and five interceptions. On the opposite end, in two games, Wells had five touchdowns and two interceptions (one of which was a drop by Felton) and was mid-pack in the yards per attempt and QB rating metrics despite playing a half a leg that is still some ways away from being healthy.
