HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — On the fifth play from scrimmage at Marshall, Virginia Tech running back Bhayshul Tuten sprinted up the middle for a 27-yard gain, the team’s longest run of the season to that point.
On the next snap, quarterback Kyron Drones kept it, bounced off a would-be tackler, got to the outside and raced down the sideline for a 31-yard score. It put the Hokies (1-3) up 7-0 early and was the first time Tech scored on an opening drive in a game since Duke last November.
In spurts, starting with the first three minutes of Saturday’s contest in Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Drones and Tuten provided explosive plays for a Hokies offense that lacked them in the first three games.
“I think we all were more focused on the run game, our jobs, our responsibilities,” Tuten said. “Just creating holes for the offensive line and the running backs hitting them, and I think it worked out.”
