Practice Report: Virginia Tech’s Quarterback Room In Flux Again With Pop Watson’s Suspension

Virginia Tech’s ever-changing quarterback room will have a slightly different look again at Marshall on Saturday, with Hokies coach Brent Pry announcing that freshman quarterback Pop Watson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

The disciplinary action is not believed to be for something egregious — a source tells Tech Sideline that it’s a curfew-related punishment — but Watson, who was effectively the Hokies’ backup quarterback last week behind Kyron Drones due to Grant Wells’ ankle/foot injury, will not be available for at least this week.

That further strains a Tech quarterback room that’s been in flux lately. Drones, who made his first career start at Rutgers, took first-team reps again Wednesday and looks like he’s in line to take the first snap again Saturday.

“I’ll tell you what, he’s pouring it into it,” Pry said after Wednesday’s practice. “He’s a hard worker. He’s in the film room. He’s got his foot on the gas right now.”
