PISCATAWAY, N.J. — If there was a silver lining from Virginia Tech’s 35-16 loss at Rutgers — and you’re digging fairly deep when that’s the first part of the sentence — it’s that Kyron Drones played well enough in his first career start to think the Hokies will be OK at quarterback going forward.
If there was a downside, it was mostly everything else.
It’s that the Hokies found themselves down by three scores in the first half for a second straight week. That another early turnover led to a gift touchdown. That points were left on the board on a missed field goal and a dropped deep ball. That the defense yielded the second-most rushing yards in the Brent Pry era. That injuries are mounting to the level that it’s getting hard to see how a team with these depth concerns will get through the remaining three-quarters of the season.
In the end, it all added up to another loss, a 19-point setback to the Scarlet Knights that snapped a 12-game winning streak in the series dating back to 1992, leaving the Hokies (1-2) under .500 and desperately needing a win at Marshall next week, lest they be staring squarely into the face of the very real possibility of a 1-5 start to the season.
