Practice Report: Drones Gets First-Team Work; Watson Elevated To No. 3 QB

Grant Wells dressed out but got limited work, Kyron Drones took the most reps he’s had with the first-team offense since the end of August camp and Pop Watson was elevated to No. 3 on the depth chart.

That was the update from Virginia Tech’s practice Wednesday evening, with the Hokies’ quarterback situation in flux for Saturday’s game at Rutgers.

Tech’s plan behind center remains up in the air after an ankle injury hobbled Wells for the second half against Purdue, a situation dire enough that the Hokies turned to Drones on the final drive of a 24-17 loss.

Described as questionable, Wells participated some in Wednesday’s practice. He threw on the side while the rest of the team went through ball-security drills early on and stepped in during some throwing drills.
